Learn about Lucid Dreams
The first step to having a lucid dream is by learning about lucid dreams. Find articles, websites and other relevant materials that will help you learn more about lucid dreams.
Make Your Room Hospitable For Dreaming
Create a good environment in your bedroom for dreaming. Dreams occur during the rapid eye movement (REM) cycle of your sleep. Ensure that your room is dark and has the correct temperatures to facilitate sleep. In addition, ensure that your bed is comfortable for you. Good conditions in your bedroom will induce sleep and lucid dreams.
Keep a Dream Journal
It is important to note down your dreams as soon as you wake up. This will help you record memories and know what tunes you to dreams when you sleep. Use this journal as a guide to help you know yourself better and understand what makes your dream more often. Alternatively, use a dream journal app such as DreamKeeper or Awoken to digitally record your dreams.
Perform Reality Checks
Perform reality checks to confirm whether you are awake or asleep. Begin with simple reality checks. Simply look at your left palm. Then use your right index finger and try to push it through your left palm. The results differ depending on your state. If you are awake, your index finger will touch the surface of your palm. If you are asleep, your finger will go right through your palm.
Turn Off all Screens
About an hour before sleep, ensure that you turn off all screens from electronic devices. This means television, smartphones, iPods, Kindles and any other light-emitting electric device. This is to ensure that your room is dark enough for the body to produce melatonin or the ‘dark hormone’ which induces sleep. Light from screens disrupts the secretion of this hormone.
Set an Alarm
Set an alarm to go off five to six hours after you initially fall asleep. The alarm will essentially go off between 4 to 6 am, which is normally during your last sleep cycle, the REM cycle. Ideally, you are supposed to wake up, then go back to sleep. The alarm sound should be soft, soothing or nature sound.
Wake Up With Your Eyes Closed
Essentially, the alarm is supposed to wake you up. However, make sure that you wake up with your eyes closed. This keeps your mind semi-woke yet active while preparing the body to go back to sleep. This will spark off a lucid dream.
Other factors will help you get a lucid dream easy and fast
Meditate: Meditation helps in separating the body from the mind. Like lucid dreams, this requires practice. Meditate often to reflect on issues in your life, and prepare your mind to control the body not the other way round. With the mind-controlling the body, it is easy to lucid dream.
Listen to Binaural Beats: Binaural beats are beats that have two frequencies are playing simultaneously which enter each ear individually. The beat is then processed by the brain as one single frequency that merges the two distinct frequencies. You can find them for free on youtube or purchase apps. Choose a frequency of between 4-8 HZ for appropriate brainwave activity. Binaural beats encourage lucid dreams.
Play Video Games: Video games offer a simulation of the real world. This tends to simulate tendencies of the simulation manifesting itself in your dreams. Play video games to allow yourself to have an exploratory mindset during your sleep.
