How Your Brain Makes Decisions

How your brain makes decisions image

When you are lost and confused on which route you should take while driving and you stop to make a few quick thinking decisions, your brain is processing all the options available to you and determines the best solution available to you. The human brain is divided into two parts(Right and left). Both of them have their own functions. The left side of the human brain takes care of the thought processing, analytical considerations and logical sequencing. The right side of the human brain helps out with the innovative thought making and looking at the brighter picture. Both of these parts form together the whole brain and both of these parts play a great role in the process.

How your brain makes decisions imageIt’s commonly thought that the people who are right handed are left brain dominant and those who use their left hands are right brain dominant. However, even if one side of the brain is dominant, both the parts play an equal part in decision making. The process of decision making is a complicated one which includes a lot of elements.

Understanding the way the brain works

Understanding the way the brain comes to the final decision has been studied in depth and researched through various experiments. It was discovered when a rat faced a challenge, it used it’s hippocampus to find the previous experiences to help it make the decision. The hippocampus is situated behind the eyes. It is a part of the limbic system and hence it has two sides. The hippocampus works with both parts of the brain in developing memory. Memory plays a large part in the decision making process.

How the brain works imageDecision making process includes large connections made inside the brain to conclude to a final decision. It has been discovered that even if the small part of the decision making process is damaged, the whole process completely shuts down and stops the brain’s decision making ability. Another component which comes into play while making a decision is human behavior. It includes small influences like circumstances, mood of the person and also the conditions faced. A series of experiments were made by psychologists, participants were faced with different awkward situations and then asked to make decisions like questionable information about them, etc. The results showed that people used their emotional reaction a lot rather than relying on controlled, rational decision.

Understanding the brain’s functions

As I have said earlier, the right and left side of the brain’s functions are very different but they both work together in helping to make decisions. The left and left brains properties and functions help a lot in arriving at a decision. However, the dominant part takes the process in it’s own hands and comes to the final decision. Most of the population being left brain dominant, allows their rational side in charge to make the most decisions.
